The trip will take place from November 23rd - November 26th 2019. The Sportive itself will run on Monday 25th. Expect an early start to try and get as many miles on the clock before the temperature rises with the sun. You’ll be cycling on a mixture of bright orange, mud-packed roads and smooth, sun-baked tarmac highways. By the end of the day you’ll be tired, hungry and in need of a nice cold Star Beer (which we’ll be sure to provide), but you’ll also have the satisfaction of conquering the challenging and unique Sierra Leone Sportive.
Day 1 - Fly to Freetown Lungi Airport, Sierra Leone
After a long day’s flight to SL, you’ll land in the evening in Freetown. You’ll spend your first night here in order to get a good night of rest, and a chance to meet some of the other cyclists you’ll be on the roads with.
Day 2 - Transfer to Bo and acclimatisation
The next morning, Street Child staff will accompany you to Bo, the starting point of The Sportive. Once in Bo, you'll meet the local Street Child team. We'll allocate you a bike and our amazing mechanic Karim will set it up for you. Enjoy an induction and safety briefing from the Street Child team before your first visit to one of our projects in Bo.
Day 3 - The Sportive: Bo to Makeni - Distance: 120km
It’s the big day. We’ll get you ready for an early start out of Bo, heading north towards Makeni, around 120km away. It’s going to be a long day so pace yourself, however we’ll have pit-stops set up en route as a chance for you to rest and refuel. Get ready for some of the most breathtaking scenery you’ve ever experienced from the saddle of a bike, and be prepared for celebrations, carb-heavy food and cold beer upon your triumphant arrival into Makeni after an unforgettable day of cycling.
Day 4 - Makeni to Freetown Lungi
And finally, back to Lungi Airport. If you have commitments that prevent you from extending your stay in stunning Sierra Leone, we’ll get you back to the airport for your return flight. On the way, we’ll make a detour to show you another example of Street Child’s work; a quick stop at one of the schools which we support.
If, however, you would like to extend your journey, we are able to facilitate that. Sierra Leone has some amazing, underrated beaches; the perfect reward after a long day of cycling. Alternatively, if you would like to spend more time seeing our projects, we can organise a day or two of visits to one of our rural schools, or to a local market to meet some beneficiaries of our Family Business Scheme.
