What You Need To Know.

Ability and Fitness.

This challenge doesn't require high levels of fitness!

Participants should be experienced cyclists and be comfortable cycling full days (approx. 60 miles) for four days in a row.

Sierra Leone is hot! We will be cycling at a relaxed pace so we can enjoy the stunning jungle scenery and will be stopping to hydrate regularly.

You will be able to cycle at your own speed.

Terrain and Bikes.

The ride travels across Sierra Leone along stunning, very orange, mud-packed roads. There will be lumps, bumps and large puddles - and terrain will vary throughout the trip; we call the route ‘undulating’.

We work in partnership with a local cycling shop to source the bikes in Bo, Sierra Leone at the beginning of the trip. They’ll likely be hybrid mountain bikes and we’ll sort a bike fitting on day one.

We’d definitely encourage bringing a gel saddle in your luggage but stay away from padded shorts, trust us on this one - the sweat is unreal.

Supported Ride.

This is a fully supported ride which means you will have medical and mechanical support on hand.

Our local mechanic, Karim has excellent flat tyre changing skills and will carry spare parts.

We will also have two support cars on hand in case you need a rest. They will also be carrying all your kit on cycling days.

We will be travelling with expedition medics who are on hand throughout the ride.

The Cost.

Ride Sierra Leone costs £650 per person. This includes all transport, food, accommodation. This entrance fee covers event costs - your fundraising is what supports Street Child’s projects.

What’s Included:

  • All accommodation for the duration of the challenge.

  • All transport and transfers to and from the airport

  • All food and drink (inc. clean drinking water throughout)

  • Bespoke Ride Sierra Leone jersey

  • Support vehicles and mechanic

  • Medical team

  • A locally-sourced hybrid or road bike

Ride Sierra Leone is organised by the charity Street Child. We think it’s really important to be transparent so we separate participant costs and fundraising; that way you and your sponsors know that all the money you raise will support Street Child and our work.

We ask that every participant fundraises a minimum of £1,500 - 100% of which goes to support our work giving vulnerable children the chance to go to school.

As part of Ride Sierra Leone you’ll have unparalleled insight in to the work of Street Child as you visit our projects along the route!

Optional extras:

  • You can choose to extend your trip and stay at the stunning coastal retreat of Bureh beach for £60 a night. Accommodation here is on a bed and breakfast basis.

  • Visit the Tacaguma Chimpanzee sanctuary - we can organise a trip to the sanctuary for anyone who wants to learn more about Sierra Leone’s primate population and the nation’s conservation organisation.

Visas For UK Citizens.

Unless you are from West Africa, you will need a visa for Sierra Leone. Street Child can help to organise your visa. A single entry for Sierra Leone visa costs £109.

If you are travelling with us from outside of the UK please get in touch and we will be able to answer any questions.

Travel Health.

All cyclists will need to ensure they have the correct vaccinations ahead of the trip. Both the Yellow Fever Vaccine and Malaria tablets are compulsory to travel to Sierra Leone.

  • Yellow Fever Vaccine. The yellow fever vaccine is not usually available free on the NHS. It will cost around £60-80. You can also go to a private travel clinic who will be able to adminster the vaccines.

  • Malaria Tablets. You will need to take malaria tablets throughout your stay in Sierra Leone and Liberia. Your GP will be able to advise you on the best ones to take.

Your flights are not included in the travel package. Return flights cost on average £500. You will fly into and from Freetown, Sierra Leone.

There are currently four companies providing these flights: Royal Air Maroc (via Casablanca), Brussels Airlines (via Brussels), Air France (via Paris), and KLM (via Amsterdam). If you are travelling with your own bike, we recommend you travel with Air Brussels or Air France.
